Yay for JPM

Juan Pablo Montoya won the NASCAR Sprint Cup race this weekend at Watkins Glen. It is his third NASCAR win, the second on the Sprint Cup level. In 2007, Montoya won the Nationwide Series race in Mexico City and the Sprint Cup series race at Infineon Raceway. All of JPM's victories have come on road courses.

The 42 car led 72 of 90 laps at Watkins Glen, and Montoya battled hard with Marcos Ambrose during the middle part of the race. Ambrose appeared to be faster, and actually passed Montoya for the lead. However, Ambrose had trouble on restarts and after the last round of pit stops Montoya was able to pull away for the win.

With this win, JPM adds Watkins Glen to the list of historic tracks he won on, including Hockenheim, Silverstone, Long Beach, Monza (twice!), Daytona International Speedway, the streets of Monaco, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Juan Pablo is the first non-American driver to win more than one NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

In other news, Bernie Ecclestone, the big boss of Formula One, has recently said that having an American on the F1 grid would be good for the sport.

"Regarding an American driver, we have tried that lately but obviously what's missing is the right attitude... You can race successfully in the US without the huge effort you need to succeed in Formula One. But to have someone like Danica Patrick in F1 would be a perfect advert."

This from the guy who once told Danica directly that "women should be dressed in white like all the other domestic appliances." This man is definitely crazy, but he may have a point. Danica's won exactly one race while racing with a top team at the top level, on fuel strategy. Perhaps a case may be made that she's merely an advert on the Indycar grid.
